On may 11th Pages presented the second edition of its project Sunset Cinema at Display in Prague. In this context we saw appropriate to briefly introduce this contemporary art space.
The following was sent by David Kulhánek, one of the intiators of Display.
Display is a space for contemporary art founded in 2001 by four artists and curators in Prague. From its beginning, the project aims to maintain international exhibition program, and focuses on setting up direct communication between the Czech art scene and relevant art contexts abroad. The initial impuls was, in fact, a reaction on the stagnation of contemporary art institutions in the Czech Republic. Even if the situation has not changed much since 5 years, Display found its position somewhere between a private project (private gallery, artists space) and an independent institution. In the local conditions of not enough articulated contemporary art organizational system, Display acts as a hybrid structure that fills the wide gap, and mirrors its rather critical parameters, Anyway, besides all, Display intermediates certain communication, which is a sort of service for Czech contemprary art scene. The program of Display, nevertheless, tries to link the project with the relevant and rather standard contemporary art activities all around. So far, also because of the space capacities and budget limits, the program has been consisting mostly of solo shows or small scale projects. There is no primary focus, the diversity of attitudes is what Display wants to show besides all. Anyway, if there should be a short and concise statement: Display is interested in projects which explore and contextualize certain reality through different means and practices.
Display started to closely collaborate with tranzit initiative in the Czech Republic this year. The aim of this cooperation is to slightly redefine and upgrade the project.
